Arvo Pärt (1935-)

Born in Paide, Estonia in 1935, Pärt’s musical studies began in 1954 at the Tallinn Music Middle School, interrupted less than a year later while he fulfilled his National Service obligation as oboist and side-drummer in an army band. He returned to Middle School for a year before advancing to the Tallinn Conservatory in 1957 where his composition teacher was Professor Heino Eller. Pärt started work as a recording engineer with Estonian Radio, wrote music for the stage and received numerous commisions for film scores so that, by the time he graduated from the Conservatory in 1963, he could already be considered a professional composer. A year before leaving, he won first prize in the All-Union Young Composers’ Competition for a children’s cantata, Our Garden, and an oratorio, Stride of The World. [Read more]

Charles joins the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for a workshop on Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, whose work has a profoundly spiritual quality.

Pärt is one of the 3 composers whom I really adore (the other 2 are Bach and Stravinsky). Yup…. and nothing in between!

Horace 提及 mysql 中的亂碼問題。我不是這方面的專家，不過我的發現是若用上utf-8 為 mysql 的 charset 及 collations，而輸入時 WordPress 的 Options-> Reading -> Encoding for pages and feeds 為 UTF-8，中文顯示應是沒問題的。

不知其他人是否有這問題，但我所發現的是：當 mysql 的 charset 及 collations 是 utf-8，但 WordPress 的設定為 Big5，絕大部份的中文輸入是無問題的，但有些情況亂碼仍會出現。這可能是 big5 的 charset 中 有些 combinations 是 utf-8 所沒有的。於是當輸入 big5 characters 到一個以 utf-8 為 charset 及 collations 的 table 時，亂碼便（有可能）發生。

最理想當然是 mysql 和 wordpress 全用 utf-8。但我卻要將 blog 內的中文 posts 重新以 utf-8 輸入。很費時呢！

Horace & Ivon, I am so happy to see you today.

Although it is such a brief meeting, yet I am so glad to have a chance to meet my brother and sister from afar whom I can really associate with. Seeing you is like seeing my memories — all the good times and bad times. Seeing you is like seeing what God have done in my life (and yours). Praise Him!

Horace, I will pray for you. Yes, it might seem far-fetch at this point, but I know if the Lord is willing, there is a way. Don’t loose heart, if it is indeed your dream, I am sure He will prepare the best for you and your family.
