耶穌訓言的重要性並非只在於它那前無古人的特點，而主要在於祂把舊約猶太思想中廣泛離散的部份整合成一獨特的面相，以描述上帝統治下的生活。換句話說，耶穌的獨特性在於祂事奉的整個形態和祂自己個人的奧妙中，而非在於祂事實上說過一些沒有人說過的話（雖然祂間中這樣做）。
