One of my favorite Christmas hymns — In the bleak midwinter:

Yes, just what are you going to give to this new born King?

In the bleak midwinter, frost wind made moan,
earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
in the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;
heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
but his mother only, in her maiden bliss,
worshiped the beloved with a kiss.

What can I give him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
if I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
yet what I can I give him: give my heart.

在寒冷嚴冬裏，凜風如怨訴，

蒼天何能容祂，大地更卑微，

天使與眾天軍，排列在上方，

惟有主貞潔母親，喜樂滿胸襟，
她用慈祥輕吻，來崇拜聖嬰。

像我如此貧乏，無物可獻上，
我若是個牧人，我願獻小羊；
我若是東方博士，本分我當盡，
但我所能獻呈，祇有我的心。

每當我重讀聖經對耶穌降生的描述，總是被上主那種對「世人的遊戲規則說不」的信息和行動所懾服。

道成肉身的大禮，

豈不是祂同時對我們的自滿和自憐說，

「收檔啦」

？

有多少人明白聖誕對我們真正的顛覆與震撼？

「有幾個博士從東方來到耶路撒冷、說、那生下來作猶太人之王的在那裡。我們在東方看見他的星、特來拜他。希律王聽見了、就心裡不安．耶路撒冷合城的人、也都不安。」

馬太福音 2:1下-2

「有主的使者站在他們旁邊、主的榮光四面照著他們．牧羊的人就甚懼怕。那天使對他們說、 不要懼怕、我報給你們大喜的信息、是關乎萬民的．因今天在大衛的城裡、為你們生了救主、就是主基督。」
