Just want to share what I heard in the DVC lectures by Dr. Evans yesterday. He didn’t directly answer the questions raised by the DVC book/movie (even though a handout was prepared), but rather he tried to bring us back to the days when Jesus lived through archeological evidence so that we can understand the Bible and the events that occurred better. This is an eye-opener for me as the church seldomly teaches this way (I mean through historical evidence.. )

In the first lecture about Jewish burial traditions, he showed us lots of pictures of tombs and ossuaries (yes, that’s what we spent an hour looking at.. tombs!!) He concluded that the burial of Jesus was highly probable even though he was a criminal. He then talked about the dead sea scrolls in the second lecture. As expected, he told us that the scrolls did not say anything regarding Jesus. He talked about the Qumran and what these scrolls tell us about the Jewish beliefs around the time of Jesus and John the Baptist such as messianism, exorcism, etc. He then compared these with Jesus teachings and showed the differences.

Anyhow, I found it interesting to sit in a number of Jewish Christians. The lectures were informative and entertaining. However, I think Dr. Evans spoke too much Hebrew and Greek which I know nothing of…

  4. Thank you Karen for your report on Evan’s lectures. I am glad that they are more on historical facts and evidences, less on meaningless attacks against a piece of fiction.

As I mentioned before, what we can really appreciate from DVC is that it opens doors for Christians and non-Christians alike for topics and researches which they felt so boring before with a brand new interest and passion.
