Origins of the Pericope Adulterae

Andrew Criddle from Hypotyposeis discusses the origins of John 7:53-8:11, commonly known as Pericope Adulterae (PA).

We can avoid postulating hypothetical forms of the pericope by suggesting that its earliest form was that known to Didymus and possibly present in Papias and/or the Gospel of the Hebrews. Shortly after the middle of the 2nd century CE this version was rewritten under the influence of the Protevangelium to produce the form of the pericope familiar to us.
