Time for some serious…. shopping!

No one was able to give me any pointers on good marketing and advertising books. Anyhow, I have already picked up Unstuck and The Elements of Persuasion, and I am enjoying the read very much.

Anyhow, here is my latest amazon order:

  1. The New Interpreter’s Bible : Acts – First Corinthians (Volume 10)
    • I really enjoyed Hays’ volume on Galatians from the same series. The format and discussions are to-the-point and relevant. I think it is time for me to engage in Wright’s commentary on Romans. I just have too many questions to ask!
  2. The Saving Righteousness of God: Studies on Paul, Justification and the New Perspective
  3. Colossians Remixed: Subverting the Empire
    • Keesmaat studied under Wright, and Walsh, a friend him, was my professor on Postmodernity and Christian engagement. Can you imagine that they had been writing this book ever since I studied at Wycliffe!
  4. Contours of Pauline Theology: A Radical New Survey of the Influences on Pauls Biblical Writings
    • Holland put strong emphasis on understanding Paul through OT, with the hoped-for New Exodus, now fulfilled in Christ, at the center of his reading strategy.
  5. Old Testament Theology: Israel’s Gospel
  6. Old Testament Theology: Israel’s Faith
    • 2 of Goldingay’s 3-vol magnum opus, using the narrative approach to understanding Israel’s story.

Hello Edmund you want some good marketing book pointers?

The standand textbook will be from Dr. Philip Kotler: Marketing Management. Its a general textbook which is very comprehensive on 101 marketing principles.

Other topics depends of what sub-branches and schools of viewpoint of marketing you want to read. A book called ‘Simply better’ by Professor Patrick Barwise should be a good read about marketing getting down to basis of paying attention to customer needs. A more strategy-like book with marketing root is called ‘Dynamic Competitive Strategic’ by Professor George Day. A book called ‘Marketing and the Bottom Line’ by Professor Tim Ambler talks about how to measure financial returns of marketing effort. As for advertising I can’t recall a book offhand specifically on it, but business books that talks about a lot on fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) should have some insights, including biographies of some of their bosses. The ‘Simply better’ book will have some, but from its title you can already sense the author’s sentiments towards flashy ads.

Hope this can help and call me if you need more.

  2. Wow, Thanks Simon. That’s exact what I want! Are these textbooks and references from your MBA?

Only the one from Philip Kotler is a textbook. The rest, however, do have very solid concepts, as these books are adopted from the author\’s acadamic research papers and re-written for everyday reading. Usually the original papers or case studies will be cited in class, but I just track down some of these related publications anyway. Hope it helps and let me know if you need more.
