What about 聖靈?

Another theological conversation on our way to school one morning:

Jocelyn: Daddy, I want to invite everybody [a long list of people hereafter]… and Jesus, God and Mary…

Daddy: But what about the Holy Spirit?

Jocelyn: Oh, yes, and the Holy Spirit.

Daddy: Do you know, God the father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, they are always together, so happy that together, they are one GOD.

Jocelyn: Huh? What about Mary?

Daddy: What about Mary?

Jocelyn: Mary is Jesus’ mommy! [meaning: God is the daddy, Mary is the mommy and Jesus is the son, so Mary must be in there somewhere….]

Daddy: But Mary is a person like you and me. God the father, God the son and the Holy Spirit, together they are one God. It’s different.

  1. Haha, just tell her that the Holy Spirit’s name is called Paraclete or Pneuma. Then she can get a head start in learning Greek!

  2. Karen

I guess the combination of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit doesn’t really make sense to Jocelyn…(should be father, mother and child, right? Just like her family)…. Mary should be in and the Holy Spirit should be out…. maybe tell her that the Holy Spirit looks after us and guides us like a mom.. that makes more sense….

Then how come there’s Mary if Holy Spirit is already there? Jesus get two moms???? OH NO……

  3. Yes, Anson and Karen, I have now told Jocelyn both Greek and Hebrew names of the Spirit of God.

All these makes me wonder if Jocelyn is a Catholic…

And the idea that HS is the mother…. I thought we were still in the aftermath of the Filioque debate, not anymore?
